John-Paul’s practice encompasses many facets of intellectual property law, including the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, the incorporation of offensive/defensive and design-around strategies through the development of world-wide patent portfolios, and the preparation of patent due diligence matters, including freedom-to-operate, non-infringement, invalidity, and/or patentability matters. John-Paul has extensive knowledge and experience in many technological fields, including semiconductor, photovoltaic, and display materials and processing equipment; polymeric and catalytic materials and systems, and organic and inorganic synthesis; nanomaterials, self-assembled materials, and related materials; battery and biofuel technologies; wood and paper technologies including related compositions and process equipment for building materials, paper products, and composite fibrous materials; drilling and hydraulic fracturing fluids, proppant technologies, downhole tools, and other oilfield technologies; mining and ore recovery technologies including collectors/depressants compositions; biotechnologies including medical devices, drug delivery systems, anti-cancer drugs, and other drug and/or therapeutic compositions; spray-drying and other encapsulation techniques and related processing equipment; turbomachinery and related rotary equipment systems and processes including waste heat recovery systems, refrigeration systems, supercritical fluid systems, and power generation and storage systems; and chemical processes and equipment for ammonia synthesis, coal gasification, and fluidized catalytic cracking (FCC).
As a doctorate student at MIT, John-Paul's Ph.D. Advisor was Christopher C. Cummins and his Thesis Chairman was Richard R. Schrock. John-Paul conducted research in the synthesis, isolation, and characterization of unusually reactive transition metal complexes of unique design and construction; the activation of ubiquitous small molecules including dinitrogen; the assembly of novel functional groups containing both transition metals and main group elements; new methods for inorganic synthesis; and the development of new reagents (e.g., polymeric catalysts) for organic synthesis. Areas of significant contribution included the activation and study of small molecules (e.g., N2, NO, N2O, CO, CO2, and CS2) with organometallic compounds. Also while attending MIT, though independent from his doctorate research, John-Paul pursued entrepreneurial interests and started several technology companies in the fields of implantable medical devices and consumer products.
As an undergraduate student at UCLA, John-Paul conducted research in organometallic synthesis of new chemical precursors utilized in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processes, as well as conducted thin film deposition research with CVD and electrochemical plating techniques. Also as an undergraduate student, John-Paul conducted research in forensic toxicology for the Scientific Services Bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department – which led to several new evidentiary scientific standard protocols – one which was accepted by the court and successfully used in a highly publicized criminal case.
John-Paul has a portfolio of authored publications and presentations at professional conferences, as well as patented several independent inventions.
