Jeff Guinn’s practice includes domestic and foreign patent prosecution, post-grant proceedings, copyrights, and due diligence related to a variety of technologies and industries. Such industries include: computer software, virtualization technologies, computer hardware, datacenter technologies, network hardware, network device software, network protocol technologies, Infiniband technologies, mobile computing devices, consumer electronics, human-device interface technologies, semiconductor technologies, material science technologies, embedded devices, micro-electrical mechanical systems (MEMS), computer security technologies, social network technologies, navigation systems, telecommunications technologies, construction industry software, on-line business and advertising, and financial technologies.
Mr. Guinn’s practice also includes license review and drafting, open-source license compliance, standards compliance, review and assessment of IP related obligations arising from participation in or association with standards making entities, and defensive patent strategies.
Mr. Guinn’s experience at the firm includes a variety of patent prosecution related activities, including drafting patent applications for a wide variety of technologies, drafting responses to office actions, drafting appeal briefs, drafting pre-appeal briefs, drafting declarations, and directing and instructing foreign associates for filing and prosecuting patent applications in non U.S. jurisdictions. Mr. Guinn’s experience at the firm also includes copyright filings, review of standards organizations participant member agreements, review of open-source licenses covering software used by clients to determine incurred obligations, IP strategy review, post grant proceedings such as Inter Partes Reviews (on behalf of petitioner or patent owner), due diligence, license agreements, technology services agreements, invalidity contentions related to patent litigation, and Chinese invalidation requests.
Prior to his tenure at Chamberlain Hrdlicka, Mr. Guinn spent a number of years working in the R&D division of a large technology company. He began his career as a test engineer, eventually becoming Technical Lead, Project Manager, and Subject Matter Expert for virtualization-related testing in the test division. He later moved to the virtualization enablement and development team, where he performed a wide variety of technical and managerial roles related to ensuring virtualization operating systems properly functioned with relevant datacenter hardware and software.
The technical aspects of his work focused on testing, validation, enablement, and development of virtualization environments and related systems, server systems, networking systems, storage systems, infrastructure, and related technologies for datacenters. His experience included work related to network interface cards, network infrastructure, Fibre Channel infrastructure, iSCSI storage infrastructure, network and Fibre Channel switches, optical interface and connection technologies for Ethernet and Fibre Channel networks, low-latency networking technology, flexible datacenter architectures, converged network adapters, cloud technologies, servers and server subsystems, server system BIOS, blade server systems, storage disk arrays, RAID technologies, datacenter management software, hypervisors and virtualized datacenter management technologies, creation of platform-specific virtualization operating system builds, and systems certification.
