Due to concerns over a surge in questionable or potentially fraudulent Employee Retention Credit (ERC) claims, on September 14 the IRS implemented an immediate moratorium on processing new claims, through at least the end of 2023. The IRS and the Justice Department are actively investigating and pursuing potential inappropriate or fraudulent cases related to the ERC, with hundreds of criminal cases underway, and thousands of ERC claims earmarked for audit.
