American College of Tax Counsel elects Larry Campagna as Vice President

On March 1, 2022, Larry Campagna, Chamberlain Hrdlicka’s managing partner, assumed his role as the Vice President of the American College of Tax Counsel (the College). He was unanimously inducted as a Fellow in 1995 and most recently served as Secretary-Treasurer for the College.

Elected by the College’s Board of Regents earlier this year, new officers also include Armando Gomez, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, Washington, DC, President; and Bahar A. Schippel, Snell & Wilmer, LLP, Phoenix, AZ, Secretary-Treasurer. The College also elected 13 new Fellows into its ranks.

Campagna has a national reputation as an authoritative litigator in matters of business litigation and criminal tax defense, as well as federal, state and local tax controversies. Throughout his 45-year career, he has resolved thousands of civil and criminal litigation matters, many involving sophisticated and complex legal issues that established precedent in courts at all levels. He also co-authored the only casebook on federal tax crimes and has taught as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Houston Law Center since 2001. Assuming the managing shareholder role just three months before the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Campagna was among the recipients of the Houston Business Journal’s 2021 Most Admired CEO Award, recognizing his committed leadership.

Long recognized as a legal community leader by his peers, Campagna received the Texas Lawyer’s Professional Excellence Award - Lifetime Achievement; the Annual Bruce I. Hochman Award at the 36th Annual Tax Controversy Institute at UCLA; and was named a Texas Tax Legend by the State Bar of Texas, one of the highest honors for the Tax Law Section, with only 30+ attorneys selected nationwide to date. He’s been listed among Best Lawyers in America annually since 2010, including being named as 2014 and 2016 Lawyer of the Year Houston Litigation and Controversy – Tax. He continues to be ranked in Band 1 nationally and in Texas by Chambers USA since 2009 and has been named a Leading Lawyer by Legal 500. He has made the Texas Super Lawyers list annually since 2003 and has been named among the country’s leading federal tax litigators by America’s Top 100 Criminal Defense Attorneys since 2007.

Formed in 1981, membership in the American College of Tax Counsel is limited to a maximum of 700 tax attorneys across the United States - an honor reserved for those at the top of their chosen profession. The College’s members, called “Fellows,” are tax lawyers working in private law firms and in house legal departments, teaching tax in law schools, or working in federal or state revenue agencies. They are recognized for their extraordinary accomplishments and professional achievements and for their dedication to improving the practice of tax law. Fellows must be nominated by their peers for this honor. Self-nomination is not permitted. Each nominee must satisfy the established criteria and pass a rigorous screening process before he or she becomes a Fellow.
