Attorneys Weigh In On Obama’s Supreme Court Pick

March 2016

In an article published by Law360 on March 16, 2016, Gregg M. Jacobson provided his opinion on President Obama’s recent nomination of D.C. Circuit Chief Judge Merrick B. Garland. Jacobson expressed that the “Republican Party will not allow hearings or a vote on President Obama’s nominee. They said so soon after Justice Scalia’s passing, said the same even when Republican Governor Brian Sandoval was a potential nominee, and reiterated that position today.” He went on to say that “Judge Garland’s record on gun rights could be enough to deny him a confirmation hearing in an ordinary year. However, in an election year Republicans cannot confirm him because backtracking from their strongly held position would cause them to lose the respect of the Republican base, as well as independents who agree that the next president should decide the court’s future direction.” Subscribers may view the full article here.
