Charles Rettig in Law360 Pulse article

On March 5, 2024, Law360 Pulse published an article profiling the addition of former IRS Commissioner, Charles “Chuck” Rettig to Chamberlain Hrdlicka. Rettig joined as a shareholder in the Tax Controversy & Litigation Practice. He told Law360 during an interview that he missed private practice, the interactions with clients and found that the firm’s culture aligned with his beliefs.

“Somebody comes in, if the case is that bad, you tell them it's that bad, not 'Oh, hire me, and we'll get you some spectacular result.' No, you've got to tell it straight, which brings it around to Chamberlain," said Rettig. “The culture of the firm is to tell it straight, to interact with clients respectfully but also truthfully. It’s not about getting engaged. It's a matter of being a professional."

Rettig spoke about a conversation he had with Tom Cullinan, a current shareholder in the Atlanta office and Rettig’s former Chief of Staff at the IRS. "Everybody knew the commissioner title's not for sale. I respected the agency. [But] unique to Chamberlain was they have Tom Cullinan and my loyalty to him is huge, and they were supportive of me staying out there [being involved in the community]. They're not making any money by the things that I'm doing to try to change pieces of the world,” explained Rettig.

Rettig served as IRS Commissioner from 2018 to 2022, where he focused on improving the agency's service to taxpayers.
